Power, Pressure& the art ofSurvival

Large-scale abstract works by The Dutchess — layered texture, aggressive mark-making, and reclaimed narrative. Not decorative. Confrontational, physical, and unapologetically human.

The Dutchess

The Dutchess holding one of her artworks Bernelee · The Dutchess

A Johannesburg-based abstract mixed-media neo-expressionist working on large-scale canvas.

Her process combines acrylic, spray paint, newspaper collage, and intuitive layering — materials that function not as decoration, but as tools of excavation.

Newspaper fragments recur throughout the work as external narratives: public opinion, imposed value, expectation. What is imposed is absorbed, distorted, and reclaimed. The work explores survival rather than resolution — strength without softness.
